Can you remember what it was like to get ready for a field trip?

For me, it was an extra special packed lunch (a big-ass hoagie and potato chips), a new summer outfit, and the debut of my summer sneakers. Wide-eyed all night waiting for the crack of dawn, I leaped out of bed for an unfettered day with my friends - free of classroom shackles and filled with the promise of wild adventures. When was the last time you had a version of this in your adult life?

I’m seeing a new trend with my clients, and WOW do I like it. I introduce you to: The Corporate Field Trip.

Earlier this spring during “Energy Week” I was treated to such an affair, working with the illustrious Hawthorn Club (https://thehawthornclub.com/) in Midtown Manhattan. The Hawthorn Club’s mission is “to promote the appointment of women to senior corporate positions & boards; and to facilitate gender diversity within the energy sector.” Aligned with that mission, the group asked me to capture an adventure to the Empire State Building (https://www.esbnyc.com/about) where they were treated to a private tour of the inner workings of New York’s most famous icon. The Empire State Building is considered a model of modern sustainability, and it was a blast to watch the group geek out over the original and new technologies.

Nothing elicits more natural reactions than a group experiencing something together.

Hands-on activities, movement, wonder, surprise, and camaraderie… Walking the streets of a monumental city with like-minded colleagues, getting out of the conference room, and into the vibrant world surrounding your event is a recipe for success. Watching the group’s delight reminded me of how important it is to have fun - in every aspect of one’s life. Fun is what binds us together and makes an event a truly memorable one.

What fun things do you have planned for your next event? How will you make it memorable? I’d love to be there!
